You’ll need a driver’s license when you’re ready to cruise down the road in one of our quality pre-owned vehicles. And if you’re searching for licensing information, read more to learn some of the requirements for getting your Maryland driver’s license.

1.    Proof of Identity, Age, and ResidencyStudent Driver | Frederick, MD

To get a license, you must verify your identity, age, and that you live in Maryland. Documents that will sufficiently prove your identity and age include a copy of your birth certificate (original or certified), a valid U.S. passport, and a valid permanent resident card. You must also provide your Social Security Number and two documents that prove you live in Maryland, like a utility bill or bank statement.

2.    Vision Test

You must prove that you can see well enough to drive before you get licensed, and you can do this in two ways. A vision screening assesses your visual acuity and continuous field of vision, and you must pass it at the MVA. Or you may also prove sufficient vision by getting tested by your optometrist or ophthalmologist and asking them to complete a form that you can submit at the MVA.

3.    Driver’s Education Course

Any new Maryland driver must complete a driver’s education course that must include 30 hours of learning in a classroom and 6 hours of driving in a car. A learner’s permit must be obtained before getting behind the wheel. You must take one of these driver’s education courses at a licensed and certified private driving school.

4.    Learner’s Permit or Another Valid License

New drivers must obtain learner’s permits and drive for a specific minimum amount of time before they can be issued a provisional license. Their age determines how long the learner’s permit period must be. If a driver already possesses a valid, out-of-state license older than 18 months, they do not need a learner’s permit before getting a new license.

5.    Pass the Skills and Knowledge Tests

Before you can get a license, you’ll need to show you know how to drive. Maryland requires you to take a knowledge test where you answer questions and a skills test where you get behind the wheel and show how well you can drive. Remember that you need to provide insurance, registration, and a fully-operational vehicle that will pass an inspection for the skills portion of the test.
